What’s involved?

• Orientation to Red Sea coral reefs – Shallow water, reef-building coral reefs exist in a fairly narrow latitudinal band. Optimal sea water temperature for reef building corals is 23-29 Celsius. In summer, the surface waters of the Red Sea frequently exceed 29 Celsius. In this module you will learn about the coral species found in the Red Sea and consider some of the adaptations that are of interest to scientists concerned about the survival of coral reefs.
• Ecological role of reefs – In this module you will learn about the different types of coral reef, zonation  and associated ecosystems (sea grass, sandy bottom, pelagic zone, intertidal zone).
• Reef ecology – This module will use a simple classification system to categorise reef organisms into family groups, but will also introduce the student to identification to species level of key indicator species of coral reef health.
• Surveying techniques and dives – Students will be introduced to underwater surveying techniques, as well as data handling and reporting procedures. They will then conduct dives using one of the techniques discussed.
